Swollen veins in or around the back passage — common, and usually treatable without major surgery.

A small tear in the anal canal lining causing pain and bleeding. Responds well to treatment.

The second-most common cancer in Australia. Highly treatable when caught early.

A weakness in the abdominal wall. Inguinal, umbilical and ventral hernias treated with keyhole techniques.

Direct examination of the large bowel; the established test for finding and removing pre-cancerous polyps.

Stones in the gallbladder. Typically treated by keyhole (laparoscopic) removal.

Positive bowel screen

A positive FOBT result needs follow-up colonoscopy. Most positive results are not cancer — but all need investigation.

Rectal bleeding

Blood from the back passage is always worth investigating. Most causes are benign, but some require prompt attention.
